Ainley Projects
bushfire awareness – CALD community engagement

Ainley Projects worked with the Country Fire Authority to engage with culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD) living in high bushfire risk areas throughout Victoria. Through engaging with groups and individuals opportunities were created for trained and accredited interpreters to deliver bushfire safety messages to these groups.

Eight bushfire awareness sessions targeted to specific cultural groups were held as a result of Ainley Projects engagement and coordination.  Engagement with these CALD groups required a flexible and unique approach, building trust and relationships, connecting with existing networks and services, working effectively with interpreters and understanding cultural barriers.

Some of the very successful bushfire awareness sessions were with an elderly Greek group on the Mornington Peninsula, young adults from Karen in the Bendigo region, and Vietnamese speaking workers in Gippsland. Feedback from participants has been positive and it is hoped that relationships will be maintained and further opportunities created in the future.
